Default Southern Canyons 6/25

Got my offshore season started in the right way this Sunday aboard my buddy's 27 Onslow Bay out of Barnegat Inlet. We debated between canyon fishing and staying midshore for bluefin but ultimately decided to push off to one of the southern NJ canyons.

Deployed a spread of ballys, Sterling wide tracker bars and the greenstick and worked around in blue/green 67-68 degree water with lots of bait readings. Had a nice sized fish come up and miss a ballyhoo on the short rigger then pile on a plug in tight. Got that fish up to the boat to be pleasantly surprised to see a 175 class bigeye. Great way to start the day!

Fished around until noon filling the bonar box with some nice 50 lb class yellowfin, that were primarily hammering the sterling wide tracker bars we were running on the long riggers. Only two bites on the stick with the YFT preferring the bars.

Did a daytime drop for swords before picking up and running home where we encountered acres of bluefin in the 30 fathom zone. Spent a good half hour throwing everything we had at them but they just wouldn't eat, content to sun themselves on the surface instead.

An excellent trip even if I'm exhausted at work this morning!

Nice way to get your season off to a great start, especially w/a nice Bigeye. It's a slow start up this way for BFT.

The bluefin bite is on fire down here right now. Hopefully they hang around a bit this year as opposed to last year.

Hit the Mako Hotel and saw the BFT, they just wouldn't hit anything we were trolling!

We had them chasing our plugs right under the boat and they wouldn't eat anything. I had some friends out in that zone today and they did really well with fish into the 150 lb class.
